How the process works
Tattoo ink sits below the surface of the skin in particles too large for the body to clear. Laser energy is applied to the tattoo and may break that ink into smaller particles, which the body may then process over the weeks that follow. The removal therefore happens between appointments rather than during them, which is why sessions are spaced out and why the whole thing takes months rather than an afternoon.
It is worth being clear about the limits. While laser treatments can significantly lighten tattoos, complete removal is not always guaranteed. Any provider promising you a blank canvas at a fixed session count is telling you what you want to hear. What affects how many sessions you need

Clean the treated area gently with mild soap and water, as directed by your specialist.
Sun protection
Protect the treated area from direct sunlight. This matters throughout the whole series, not just for a few days.
Avoid irritation
Do not pick or scratch the treated area, however tempting it becomes.
Moisturizing
Apply a gentle moisturizer as instructed by your specialist.
Keep your next appointment
The series only works as a series. Sessions taken sporadically extend the timeline.
